WALL·E (2008)

WALL·E (2008)

I am just amazed. Watching WALL·E (2008) twelve years after it's release left me speechless. I recall 2008 when all critics were very positive. Today I finally understand and it should not have taken me so long.

The film is about the robot WALL·E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class). This is powered by solar energy, so it still works 700 years after Earth has become uninhabitable. One glitch though, WALL·E has develop human-like emotions and feels lonely.

Reasoning I skipped this movie back in the day is because I do not favor the art style. Truth is, it has not aged well either. However, you should not make the mistake of thinking like that. You can see it as an excellent book with a bad cover. You only have to open it and understand the points.

Mulan (2020)

Mulan (2020)
Spyro Rating: 7,3 /10 as "Good"
Director: Niki Caro
Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jet Li

Mulan (2020) is the live-action remake of Disney's classic Mulan (1998) animated film. Unlike other Disney's adaptations, this film tells the "legend" differently compared with the original one.

The story unfolds in medieval China. Mulan is hiding her "chi" because women are not accepted as warriors. Then a Mongol invasion happens and through conscription Mulan joins the army by pretending to be male and also hides her exceptional combat skills.

Some faithful fans are disappointed with the adaptation for not being faithful to original material. I admit that I haven't watch yet the 1998 animation. Only judged the 2020 live-action film for what it is, a good movie.

Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)

Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)
Spyro Rating: 6,5 /10 as "Good"
Director: Mike Thurmeier
Stars: John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Keke Palmer, Simon Pegg

Ice Age: Collision Course (2016) is the 5th movie in the series. Released four years after Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) and brought back all beloved characters. Same as all movies in the franchise, this can be enjoyed just fine on it's own.

The plot is about a huge meteor heading towards earth. Like the other meteor that had extinct dinosaurs in the past, now mammals face the same danger. Our heroic band of mammals realize the threat and vow to find a way to save all life on planet.

I look forward to see more movies in the franchise. Ice Age series offer great and kid-friendly humor that adults expect to watch when they want to sit down and relax.

Ad Astra (2019)

Ad Astra (2019)
Spyro Rating: 3,0 /10 as "rubbish"
Director: James Gray
Stars: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland
More details on IMDB and Wikipedia

It is sad to explain how a 100M dollar budget space science fiction film can be that bad. Simply put, the production got everything wrong and the movie ended up being both bad and boring at the same time.

The story is about Tommy Lee Jones been lost in space for 29 years. He has turn mad and solo-started an experiment somewhere near Neptune. That experiment has one side effect, a power surge will travel all the way thought space and will destroy planet Earth. The hope of humanity is that his son, Brad Pitt, will go there to talk sense to his father.

While watching sci-fi movies, the subconscious part of our mind evaluates how the film's fiction is likely to happen in our future. Watching Ad Astra (2019) not a single thing looks even remotely possible. Everything that has to do with technology, society, politics, characters, the whole scrip, even today psychics is just nonsense or/and wrong.
