Spyro Rating: 8,2 /10 as "a Disney film"
Director: Sam Raimi - Writer: Mitchell Kapner
Stars: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis
Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) is inspired by L.F. Baum's 1900's Oz Novels. This movie intends to be a prequel to the classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by telling it's own origin story for the famous wizard.
Oscar Diggs under stage name "Oz" makes for the living as a touring circus magician who tries to fool his audience that his magic is real. He wrongs many people and eventually his lack of morals gets back to him. Oz barely escapes via a hot air balloon but something happens and he finds himself in a land where magic is real. Realizing the opportunities in the new land, Oz plans to con everyone that he is the messiah who fell from the sky. He will help the good witches beat the evil ones, provided he gets paid in gold.
The story told in Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) is not canon and came a hundred years after the original Oz Novels. While the movie can be enjoyed without any knowledge in origin lore, it does not comply with the novels continuity as certain details come in conflict. Provided you can overlook this, along with Mila Kunis' bad performance, it is a good movie to watch.
